breaking down all the walls.

Well, just in the same way that I cut a whole in the studio wall to see what was on the other side...I felt like you all deserved some insight into what is coming up and coming out from my studio walls this winter...

A new series is blooming and with it prefaces a year of wondering thought, conceptual planning and attention to detail... At times my work lends itself to illustrate an undefinable line between photography and painting. ...about 7 or so mediums collide to create a full mixed media process...

the new series is no different. But I would say there is a heightened sense of awareness for historical relevance mixed with an unassumed innocense in imagery...

i spotted a new found freedom with my work- it was painful but necessary.

it's about breaking down all the walls that hold us in... right?

Peter Greenaway In NYC..."impassioned crusade"

Artist and film maker Peter Greenaway... A visonary and on a passionate pursuit to bring creative awareness back to a visually confined generation.

His New York installation will be showing at the Park Avenue Armory starting December 3rd, 2010.

Leonardo's Last Supper: A Vision by Peter Greenaway, resides within a full scale replica of the Refrectory of Santa Maria Della Grazie that served as home to the original da Vinci master piece.

Within the complete repica of the Santa Maria... Greenaway digitally reproduced the orginal Last Supper.

The experience is tranformative for viewers as the digital production takes observers through a process breaking down visual layers of the original work by Leonardo Davinci.

As quoted from "W" magazine December 2010 issue: "Greenaway's impassioned crusade to deepen visual lieteracy among what he calls 'a laptop generation of people who believe there's no cinema before Quentin Terantino nor painting before Jackson Pollack."

Why am I enthralled at works by Peter Greenaway?... (Other than the obvious soaring installations with manipulations of light, sound, and theatrical greatness) He is challending a generation of people to see again and to even revisit the great works of art produced long before our time of current creativity.

He transfigures traditional painting and has used the gadgeted details of a world so sensory driven to media, and produced a reverberating experience from the mind of a great master.

His approach is fresh and new to a world numbed by expected yet somewhat delightful cinema.

Creating experiences is the most engaging thing about art. In this he has succeeded. Every sense should be awakened and heightened...

If I am not creating great "works of encounter" for viewers then I am no longer a visonary artist... but a mere fabricator of material. I refuse this type of small thinking... and even in my most humble image there will always be huge visual implications... Every piece matters and every great work of art can serve a purpose.

from Amelia: New Works at Pryor

This Friday, October 8, from 6 to 8 pm, Pryor Fine Art is hosting an opening for "some of the city's favorite artists," who just happen to be our very own Mattress Factory friends and studio neighbors. Courtney J. Garrett, Todd Alexander, and John Folsom are showing new works at Pryor this month in honor of "Atlanta Celebrates Photography" during October. Not that these artists produce pure photography, for all are mixed media artists. They are being recognized because of their innovative take on photography through the mixing of images, layers of materials, and re-defining of what is typically seen as a "painting."

Hello blogging world. I am ever far behind in catching up with you-

Here's a bit of what is going on and what is coming up in the studio and beyond...

I just returned from the Hampton/Long Island Area... an amazingly inspiring trip- life changing some would say for an artist.

Yearly shows have begun for me as well...this Thursday night the private patron party is scheduled for the Dian Fossey foundation- followed by the Opening Public Gorilla fund Event September 23rd, 2010. This is a very exciting time as the studio releases it's first historically documented international series. I feel the weight of such a responsibility and am ready to share the works in a public setting. They are emotionally dynamic-- as I try and express the layered life of a woman and her work... She so passionately connected to her environment.

"Atlanta Celebrates photography" month is just around the corner with October approaching. New works will be shown through Pryor Fine Art Gallery here in Atlanta. Pryor Fine art will also house more new works in a 2 person show this spring featuring a multi-faceted mixed media series from the studio.

As it always seems October is a very busy month for me- New works will also be released Hilton Head, SC for a solo exhibition towards the mid-end of the month in October. Moreover, I plan to close out the month with a trip to Hong Kong- I am very excited about my anticipated time there... as i am sure another life changing event is on the horizon.

The Studio at the Summit

On May 15, 2010, 23,000 people gathered to watch 590 of the world's rising designers showcase their potential in one space at one time: the 145,000 square foot Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. The 22nd annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) attracted designers from 40 different countries and 14 different contingencies, and was called "the global summit of what's best and what's next in design."

The studio had the privilege of being represented in the Holly Hunt New York showroom with one of Courtney's latest series: Blackbird. Here are a few photos from the show...

it's a mystery for now but- we've got a lot of stuff in the works. it seems to be the most passionately documented series yet. -- or just until the next one. stay tuned.
